Pansy Power- Free Pattern

I thought I’d share this with everyone as a celebration of spring arriving. I worked this up a little while ago when I was asked to make a blanket for someone. I couldn’t find a pattern for the pansy flowers that she requested, or at least not one I understood, so I made one.

Hopefully it can be understood. Please ask if you have any questions or let me know if anything is unclear. The pattern is written in two parts working the bottom three petals first and then the larger top two petals last.

I used three colours of 4ply cotton, in yellow and then any other two colours you think will achieve a pansy colour scheme (the amount you need is very small, literally 10 to 15g if that) and a 3mm crochet hook.

The pattern has been written using standard US terms

ABBREVIATIONS

sc- single crochet

dc- double crochet

ch- chain

hdc- half double crochet

htr- half treble crochet

slst- slip stitch

tr- treble crochet

bl- back loop

fl- front loop

PATTERN

Start by using your centre colour  (I used yellow) and making 8sc in to a magic circle and fasten off.

You are going to work the 3 smaller bottom petals first.

Using your first colour and working in to the front loop only- (ch2, dc, htr) into the same stitch,  (dc,  ch2, sl st) in next st.

Sl st to next st, ( ch2, dc, htr) in same st, (htr, dc, ch2, sl st) in next st.

(Sl st to next st, ch2, dc, htr) in same st, (htr, dc, ch2, slst) in next st, fasten off.

Next row (worked in to both loops as normal unless stated otherwise), using your third colour start in the same stitch as previous row – ch2, (sc, hdc), these are worked in to the top of your first st, 2dc in second st, (hdc, sc) in third st, ch2, slst to bl of the stuff which contains the second ch2. This is the first petal complete.

Slst to the front of the second petal, ch2, (sc, hdc) in first st, 2dc in each of the next 2 sts, (hdc,dc) in last st, ch2 slst in fl that contains second ch2 slst. This is your second Petal complete.

Slst to bl for next petal, ch2, (sc, hdc) in first st,  2dc in next st, (hdc, sc) in last st, ch2 slst in fl of St containing second ch2 slst. Fasten off.

Now to make the two larger top petals using the same colour.

Turn the flower so you are working from the back, you will see you have two unworked stitches left, starting in the bl of the St before these ch2, 2dc in fl of next st, 2tr in fl of next step, (2dc, ch2, slst) in bl of next st,  turn.

Ch2, working in to both loops – 2sc, 2hdc, 2dc, 2dc, 2hdc, 2sc, ch2 slst (this join will be where you first started making your petal), sl right to bl of next st and repeat these instructions to make the next petal except you will work in to the bl of the stitches this time.

It is easier than it sounds but I would love to know how you get on.

  1. Hello,
I love this pansy and I have it almost done! But I don’t understand the end. What am I repeating? I’m out of stitches from the magic loop. Did I do something wrong?
    Thanks!

    1. No, the first and last part of the first large petal will be in the back loops too with the middle 2 stitches in the front loops, but all of the second large petal will be in the back loops. Some of the back loops are used more than once.
If it still doesn’t make sense let me know and I’ll do some extra pictures to try and explain it more clearly ☺
